Kirby Derby Day! (Tomorrow!)

I'm so excited about this that you'll have to excuse me for posting about it a day early. I want to give you plenty of time to decide that you NEED to go. You guys. If you have not been to the Kirby Derby yet, you are missing out. Tomorrow marks the 11th derby, and it is a tradition steeped in costumes, parades, and rickety man-made cars. For the uninitiated, it's essentially a block party that culminates in an adults-only soapbox derby that takes racers down a hill and around a ninety-degree curve. It's totally free to attend, so bring a cooler of beer, your dogs, your kids, your friends, and enjoy the mayhem. Food trucks will be there, and there's plenty of shade on the street. I'd recommend shooting for a 3:30-4:00 ETA; the parade starts at 5:30, followed by the race at 6:30. As it's 2012, the theme this year is The End Of The World, so I can't wait to see what people have come up with - you really have to be there to understand the wackiness that is Kirby Derby. Hope to see you tomorrow!

Glad you have a love for our little Derby!! It was a GREAT day- weather, crowd, parade and races are all getting better each year. It's all becase of the people that come and have a good time that it all works. Everyone cleans up after themselves and looks out for their neighbor on the street- both residents and visitors- and in the end, a day full of memories has been imprinted into our brains. Hope you plan on entering a racer next year or participate in the parade- we should have a theme after the new year- we aren't making plans yet since the Mayans COULD be right LOL ......as a side note- wouldn't encourage dogs at this event- kids yes, pets are a whole other X-factor in crowds that size and other pets. Even residents send the pups away for the day many times.
